Meta Tags and Page Title Tags

Are the metataghtml and pagetitle tags supposed to work in a hosted site? I have added them to the top of the head section in our html as <%=getCurrentAttribute('item','pagetitle')%> and <%=getCurrentAttribute('item','metataghtml')%>, but it isn't pulling in the info from the item record. Am I taking the wrong approach?
