Cash Back tab on Deposits

What exactly happens when the figures are entered into the "Cash Back" field when saving a deposit?  I don't want to experiment for fear of messing something up.  What are the side effects?  Does it just reduce the amount of the deposit and leave it at that or what?

What I want to do i accept a deposit but less a certain percentage.  The deposit should then be cleared with nor further adjustments needed.  Is the Cash Back the way to do this?
