Will a javascript statement work in a template?

Got my script to work, and yes was able to add to my template

Got the following to work in my template

 <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">  var datasheet = "test" ;  if (datasheet == "test" );  document.write("It works");  </script>
