Custom Wave Template: Can you use custom item fields as a criteria?

During my testing and asking AI, it appears that I can't use custom item fields as a custom wave template criterion. I wanted to confirm with a NS source that this is true. If it is, do you have any work around ideas? We have an item class. Examples are "Hinges" or "Locksets". We would like to be able to wave using those types of fields. All of our locks and hinges are stored near each other within the warehouse. We would like to pick them all at once. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
