How do I make a Column field mandatory via workflow action?

I'm trying to make an item Column field mandatory upon record load. However, the fields in the dropdown list only includes Body fields when I create an action for "setting mandatory fields". Help - any other ways to do this? (Other than making the field always mandatory by going to Customizations -> Lists, Fields, etc -> Transaction Body Fields?
