enforce uppercase in serial number fields?

Is there a way to enforce/convert to upper-case characters in existing serial/lot number fields?  We have had problems where users forget to use all-caps, or barcode scanners scan upper-case characters as lower-case if caps-lock is on and come time to do stock adjustments/transfers the serials are incorrect.

I'm guessing the answer will be to use scripting of some sort as they're built in fields I want to affect.
