Make a Custom Transaction Body Field Unique

Is there a way I can make a custom Transaction Body Field be either blank or unique?  We have a field we call Web Order # - it only is set by orders that come in through SuiteTalk from our homegrown shopping cart.  Is there a way to check if that field's value is unique without making it mandatory?
