Customer from Sales Order

I have a salesOrder object (returned from a transaction search) and I need to retrieve the customer information (customerid only) related to the sales order. I don't see any properties on the salesOrder object that I can use to retrieve the customer information. Is there any?

Do I have to issue a second search for the customer information?
