The operation has timed out

We are using web services to import customer records. Depending on whether or not the customer already exists in the system, we have to change the behavior of the import for that particular record.

To accomodate this, we are performing a customer search prior to the import of the customer record. This was working well up until we reached approx. 125,000 customer records in the system. Now we consistently get 'The operation has timed out' error.

Is there a way to extended the time out parameter of a web services search?
