Updating Customer Payment, what is 'doc'?

On the CustomerPaymentApply object, as well as the CustomerPaymentDeposit object, i see 'doc' with a 'long' datatype.

When I attempt to update a customer payment record through web services, i get this error.

code: LIST_ID_REQD
message: You must set doc OR You must specifiy a valid line id.
type: ERROR


what is 'doc'? is this the internal id of the customer payment record? I do not know how to populate this value.
