addSelectOption Method is not working in Client Side

Fld.addSelectOption() Method is not working in Client Side.

I m trying to add option list to select field using addSelectOption in a client-side context. But its not suppported error is returned. But Help does not list any restrictions for this method.

Can any one know alternative method or to achieve this?
