Item Groups - Client Script

We are using a client script to conditionally set the tax code on sales order lines.  If fires on field change of the item.  It works great except for on item groups.  For all but the first line of the item group the default customer tax code is being used.  We are using nlapiSetCurrentLineItemValue.

I tried using a validateline event in conjunction with nlapiCommitLineItem only to find myself in an infinite loop.  Any suggestions?
