Why does validateLine trigger after sourcing the customer?

We have a client script on invoices using validateLine on the item sublist.  It fires after sourcing of the customer. Our intent is to validate line item information when submitting a line item (type = item).  However it fires after selecting a customer and a time for which line item information is null.  Does anybody know a way around this?
