The Show in Filter Region check box is not available

Hello,

I am working with a Customer Search and would like to add a custom field to the Available Filters. When I add it, the Show in Filter Region checkbox is greyed out. The custom field has a type of Multiple Select and the List it references is a Custom List with 20 entries. What do I need to change to be able to use this field in the available filters?
