Custom Field List/Record Item Cannot Reference Non-Inventory Items

Hi,

I have a custom field to reference another item of the same type but it will not work with items that aren't Inventory Items. I've tried all 3 items:

The field is setup as:

But the field cant find the correct item. In the shot below I would like to set this filed value to that of the Subitem Of field (Parent) but can't for some reason.

Why is this the case? This field works as expected for Inventory Items, why not these? How can I work around this?
