Management Dashboard via saved searches

I am creating a management dashboard, which will have a number of business specific values.  These values come from Customer, Vendor, Sales Orders, Invoices, Payments, Tasks, etc.    Is there a way by using Saved Searches, & Workflows to create such a dashboard.  

I am able to create non-storing fields, but when I try to source it via date I get "ERROR: Field value cannot be derived from search with no matching filter field unrelated custom record"
