Approve journal and approve bills have stopped showing items pending approval. Help please

In the last couple months administrators are having problems with approval routing.  If you go to transactions>approve bills or approve journal entries nothing shows up to approve even though there are several transactions pending approval.

Does anyone know what might have changed or experienced this and been able to reslove it?
