Can a contact be related to a contract record as opposed to a customer record?

We are looking to moving from having multiple child customer records under a parent customer, to having one customer record with multiple contracts. Is it possible to have the relationship at the contract level? Then auto update when the contract is renewed? Would this be set on a contact record, or on the contract record?
