Limit Items with specific Shipping Items

I know (or I've been told) NetSuite believes all items should be able to have the same shipping methods available to them, but I have a bit of a conundrum and I am trying to find a work around.

Scenario:

Books can be shipped using "Library Rate," but if ANYTHING else is in the package we need to use 1st class or something to that affect. There doesn't seem to be a choice to make sure items cannot be shipped using specific methods. I was hoping that the item carrier/preferences on the item would work.

If I could add one of my custom segments to the rules page of shipping items I would be all good.
