Custom field controlled by custom list options

Is there a way to enable or disable custom fields based on option selection in a custom list.

For example, list has Option A and Option B. This should be linked to "custom fields" A and B. When "Option A" from custom list is selected, "custom field A" is enabled for entry, and when Option B is selected, "custom field B" is enabled for entry.
