Item Display Name/Code in sublists

A very basic question, I'm sure. So I apologize for that!

In transaction forms, the item Sales Description field appears where I would expect/prefer to see the Display Name/Code field.

Examples: Purchase Order line items, and within the pop-up Items list.

This is frustrating, because our Sales Description could be a paragraph long. Is this the standard configuration? Am I missing something?

Also, the embedded Search in pop-up item lists only searches the Item Name/Number field, which is SKU for us. There doesn't seem to be a way to search for items in sublists by Display Name or Description. Is that really the case?
