Why is my Workflow that toggles the visibility of a Custom Field based on a Condition not working?

I'm trying to hide/show a custom list field "Trade Show" on Lead records, when the "Lead Source" = "Trade Show" using a workflow.

I have created the workflow on the beforeload event and nothing happens. Yet when i set the workflow to hide the "Sales Rep" field, it works! But does nothing on my custom list.

Any ideas?
