How to track Inventory Item Sent Out for Customization (Secondary Processing)?

Here is my scenario...

We stock Item A and sell it as Item A. We also offer engraving on Item A for no additional charge and when a customer wants it engraved we send Item A to a third-party to be engraved/customized and then it is returned to us to be shipped to the customer as a Customized Item A.

Most of the time the engraving service by the third-party is free so I'm not as concerned about being able to account for additional direct costs, but I'm very interested in what the best method is to track the movement of the inventory since it is leaving our warehouse to be engraved and then being received back into our warehouse to be fulfilled/shipped.
