How to unset the Mandatory Flag of a Custom Segment and hide it?

We have a required custom field that is displayed on a number of transaction forms that, despite being edited to not be required and to not be displayed, continues to be included on the form. It is even present on the Standard version of the forms. I don't see a custom script that forces it to be included. How do we remove this? It isn't even visible as a field in some of the form definitions...
