Why are changes made to Customer Part Number?

I noticed when looking at the customer part numbers under the customer that there's a CUSTOMER ID/NAME field now. If it's blank the search returns all part numbers for all the customers. If you enter a Customer ID then it retains that ID when you lookup a different customer.

When I look at my sandbox the field used to be Internal ID and when it was left blank the search would only return the part numbers for the customer record you were on.

Has anyone else experienced this? It seems like they tried to fix something that wasn't broklen.
