Item Family and Groups

We are in the process of setting up WMS.
Can anyone shed any light on what is the difference between the two items fields Item Process Group' itemprocessgroup and 'WMS Item Group' custitem_wmsse_itemgroup and how these work in relation to each other? The same with Families.
If I create a new WMS Item Group - then the new record automatically also gets created as an Item Process Group - but not vice versa.
I know for example I can only see WMS groups and families when creating pick strategies (not Item Process Groups etc).
On this basis we had left the non-WMS fields blank on items and only populated the WMS versions. Is this the correct approach? What do the non-WMS item groups and family fields do?
