How to create a custom field to display the name of the updater when an item record is updated.

Is it possible to create a custom field that displays the name of the updater when an item record is updated with some change?
If it is further updated, the name of the most recent updater should be updated automatically.
It should be created in a custom field, not in a system note.

Do I need a script to do this? If it is feasible with a custom field or WF, please let me know how to do it.
