Modifying a bill-of-material

Is there a way that we can modify the bill-of-material form so that we can add a field per component that is the 'reference designator'?    We would like to specify which component goes where via a alpha/numeric combination in Netsuite to that same alpha/numeric combination on a drawing, and have this in the Assembly/BOM in Netsuite that then prints out on the work order BOM or even when you run a BOM in Netsuite.
