Best way to give items extra "features"?

Hi,

I don't know if you understand what I mean - but we sell CD's, DVD's, etc. - and I wish to seperate the items into DVD's or CD's or any other type of item - not only seperate them by price, title, cat.no. So that we can select different types when searching at the webstore, when we create reports, etc.

I am aware of how to create an extra customized field on the items and make a customized list to choose from - but this can't be the best way - I mean there got to be a perfect standard way? I checked with Support, and they suggested to create a customized field, so perhaps this is the best way - if any of you haven't got other ideas?
