Netsuite's sitemap generator

When I create a new sitemap, Netsuite sends an e-mail notifying me they are complete and provides 4 links to notify Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask
about the update.

Is this necessary?  Do you update the search engines using these links?   I have the URL for the sitemap in my robots.txt file.   Once the spiders start crawling your site, wont they pick up the new sitemap in their next crawl?

The ASK link has not worked for me it since this was released.

Case 1156958 was open, then closed, then an issue was created than issue closed.

as of today, still broken....  get a 404 error from ASK.
