Subtotal On Quote / Invoice

I'm trying to customize our Quote / Invoice PDF template.  I'd like to be able to have a subtotal after non-inventory items are added by type, such as Software Subtotal; Training Subtotal; Maintenance Subtotal, etc.  Has anyone done this before that can help me with some tips?  I sure hope this does not need scripting !!  Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
