How to give away gift certificate

We want to have a monthly drawing for a gift certificate.  I'm not sure how to account for this properly.  I thought about trying to "sell" a gift certificate to ourselves, but that doesn't really make sense to me. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to give a customer a credit in advance that they can use for future purchases?
