Client side scripts stop working when a dropdown changes to a search list

Has anyone run into the issue where client scripts stop working when a dropdown box changes to a search list.  My dropdown boxes have exceeded the number of entries so they become search lists and nlapiGetFieldValue and nlapiSetFieldValue do not function anymore.  This is a show stopper for me because our account has several important client side java scripts that will no longer run.  Any help or input would be appreciated.
