Safari 3 Notice

One of our users has noticed that they can no longer login with Safari 3.  Instead they receive the following notice:

Safari 3 is not currently supported. Please use either Firefox or Safari 2.

We used to be able to log in with Safari 3.  Was this a recent change?

I understand maybe not all the features work the same across all browsers, but I'm curious as to the reason why this one is rejected up front... is there a security concern?
