Direct List Editing

I'm having a problem with Direct List Editing.  There are some fields on some searches that are DLE capable but the same fields on other searches are not.  Is there a detailed user's guide that can give me more insight into this feature??

Specifically what I am trying to do right now is have a transaction search (sales orders) that has the department field editable under DLE.  Anyone know how to do that??
