<NLUSERINFO> and sign-in problem

I have my Sign-in <NLUSERINFO> tag setup to my liking but there's a problem... right after a user signs in, they are redirected to the front page, but they are not being recognized as signed in on that screen... the "Register | Log In" links are still displaying.

BUT, when you click another link, "Register | Log In" changes to the "Welcome <user name>" message that SHOULD be displaying right after the person logged in... sometimes the "Register | Log In" text will re-appear and lead the shopper to believe that they are not logged in... I don't know what's wrong with my configuration...
