merge customer records error: child customers

I am trying to manually merge two customer records that are not duplicates.

I get the following error:

---
'Customer Inc' cannot be merged or deleted because you cannot merge vendor records if any of the duplicate records have customer relationships with child customers.
---

Has anyone seen this error/know what to do about it? Neither customer record has any child records, though I am not entirely sure what is a "customer relationship with a child customer."

I am also assuming the reference to "vendor" is erroneous. Neither record has ever been a vendor record.
