Contact ID (auto) not updating when name is changed

sometimes contacts are entered with incorrect spelling when the contact record is created.  When we choose to edit the contact the "Contact ID (auto)" is not updating to reflect the changes made to the name fields.  How can this be updated? it is not an editable field as it if fed directly from the name fields.
