Shipping Methods on a per item basis

I have searched the forum and help files and can not find a way to offer a certain shipping method just for certain items in our webstore.  Is this possible? 

It seems that if I create a new shipping method it shows for all items.   I see that I could create a method called LTL for example and only have it display in the store if the weight is over 150 lbs.  However I don't have weight on about 15,000 items and some of my dropship vendors only offer UPS while others only offer LTL.   So I really need to apply it on a per item basis.
