advanced PDF/HTML layout - freemarker ?substring

i'll need a substring from a field ${record.createdfrom}
trying
${record.createdfrom?substring(0,8)}
always thrown
Exception during template merging.

trying with a non dynamic string
${'hellloworld'?substring(0,8)}
works.

any solution?
