Exception during template merging - going from CRMDSK to Scriptable

I am forced to make changes to my old message templates and I am working to migrate them to the scriptable template.  Today I got an error from one of my users.  The error on a scriptable version of a message was "Exception during template merging".  I am not sure why this is.  If I take off 99% of all the field values then it works fine.

In my role (administrator)  it works fine, so it lead me to think it was a role issue.  I have tried some other roles we have and it worked there as well.  It will only generate this error from one of my many custom roles.
