Adding Payment Reference Number to our Website Email messages

I have been trying to add the Payment Reference number onto our web email confirmation message.  I have tried using the attribute tag to pick up the reference number but it keeps coming up with an error - <%=getCurrentAttribute("salesorder","custbody_pn_ref_num")%> 

Can anyone shed some light on what I might be doing wrong
