Sales Order calculateRealtimeRate Overrides

Anyone know if its possible to redefine the behavior for calculating shipping costs when the little calculator button next to the field Shipping Cost is clicked in the Sales Order?

The function calculateRealtimeRate() is called when you click the button. Is it possible for this button to call a different function or alternatively, to redefine the function in javascript?

Basically, I'm looking to create more complex/arbitrary rules for shipping.. If anyone has any experience with implementing complex shipping policies in NS, I'd be more than happy to hear how you got it to work..
