# of jobs per month on a trend graph

I want to show the # of ongoing Jobs (Projects) per month on the trend graph and KPI and compare it to a year ago. The only way I can figure to do this is create a SS that shows all jobs that have a time entry in the month and then group the names of the jobs.  It does show the # in the SS, but doesn't work for a trend graph.  Anybody know how to do this?
