SupportCase Messages

I am trying to get a count on total messages attached to a support case. Doing a basic support case search seems to only return the incoming message. Is this a join using the messagesJoin or is it a different search entirely passing in the support case internal Id? I am writing this in PHP and as you might have discovered, there isn't much out there in the way of PHP examples.

I am still trying to get the hang of joins, so I still have a hill to climb.
