changing item names

As always, i want to do something that seems like it should be really easy, but I can't figure out how to do it.  I want to remove a prefix from all of my item numbers. The exact same prefix is on every single item number, so it seems like there should be a simple search/replace type function. Is there, or do I have to put my list in edit mode and individually edit each item name?
