controlling the breadcrumb trail

Most of our items belong to multiple categories. If a customer performs a search and navigates to an item via the search results, NS selects one of the categories that item belongs to and builds the breadcrumb trail accordingly. Is there a way to set a preferred category per item so we can control which path appears in the breadcrumb trail?
