Custom Templates - Related Item Thumbnail

Does the <%=getAttribute('item','relateditemthumbnailhtml')%> not work in the related item cell template?

It keeps giving me an error:
[Error processing dynamic tag getCurrentAttribute('item','relateditemthumbnailhtml') : attribute 'relateditemthumbnailhtml' not found]

I cant use the tag "storedisplaythumbnailhtml" as the client wants to use the resizing function specifically for the related items.
