Simple "item options" Question - please help

I am trying to use item options and when I check the mandatory box on the item option record... it doesn't make it mandatory.

I need customers to choose a size and a color option if I want to send them the correct item, but NS is letting them add it to their cart without specifying these options... am I misunderstanding the function of the "mandatory" box or what?
