Staging environment

How is it best to test a template? I uploaded a html file to our staging environment, but <%=getCurrentAttribute('item','storeDetailedDescription')%>  for example does not retrieve the relevant information as there is no item choosen (there is no item list/sidebar in our template). How would I simulate this? Before using our new template I want to make sure it all works properly.
